Window Periods

A window period or incubation period is the period of time from when a person is initially infected by a disease to the time when an STD test can expect to identify the disease. Window periods vary from a few days to 6 months. During this period of time an infected person can still transmit their disease to someone else.

If a person gets tested during this window period it is possible their test may yield a negative result. This is because the disease hasn’t been present long enough for the test to detect it.

To be safe, and to cover this window period both partners should identify the last time they had sexual contact with their last partner and select that as the beginning of their window period.

Specific STD Window Periods

Gonorrhea - usually 2 to 7 days.

Chlamydia - usually 2 to 6 weeks, but can be longer.

Syphilis - usually 10 to 90 days.

HIV - usually 2 weeks to 3 months, but could be up to 6 months.

Hepatitis A - 15 to 50 days.

Hepatitis B - usually 45-180 days, with an average of 60 to 90 days.

Hepatitis C - ranges from 2 weeks to 6 months but commonly is 6 to 9 weeks.
